People say attitude is 100% of the game. And many agree life is only 15% what happens to you and 85% how you react to it.
Within the last couple of decades, inspirational posters started to appear. “How I Met Your Mother” made some of these even more popular through their character Barney Stinson. His office was decorated with Awesomeness, Perfection, and Conformity.
Following the usual format, some kind of epic picture gets a word attached to it. The word then has a description or a quote.
As with all things, people began to make jokes out of these types of posters. Someone even created Spaceballs: The Motivational Poster.
Whether a joke or an inspiration, a positive mindset makes a fine goal. Keep reading for 15 positive quotes to help your daily life.
1. “Historians are like deaf people who go on answering questions that no one has asked them.” Leo Tolstoy
To get you into a positive mindset, let’s start with a bit of a laugh. As someone else once said, “History isn’t boring. History is full of fascinating stories. Historians though, historians are boring.”
2. “Most folks are as happy as they make up their minds to be.” Abraham Lincoln
He presented a great truth in this statement. Have you ever paused to ask yourself why you don’t laugh more? Or smile more? Or have a more positive outlook?
The reason may exist no further away than your own mirror. We have much greater control over ourselves and our circumstances than we think. And if a man existed who knew something about chaos, it was Lincoln.
3. “Always do sober what you said you’d do drunk. That will teach you to keep your mouth shut.” Ernest Hemingway
What does this have to do with positivity? A fair question, at first glance, nothing. But with a moment’s pause, you begin to see it.
But not just in drunk moments, in all moments. Choosing to be a person who always does what you say you will do changes your outlook. And, it makes you a person who thinks before speaking.
That alone will improve your life by vast amounts.
4. “An arrow can only be shot by pulling it backwards.” Megan Street
If you have a friend with an older style longbow, ask to join them someday while they shoot it. Or, ask to shoot it yourself.
For the first few inches, only a small amount of tension pulls against your fingers. But the further you draw back, the more it hurts and the more it costs you. The tension grows and grows until your fingers press against your own cheek.
And the straighten arm fights to hold steady. But as soon as you release, the arrow soars to impossible heights and distances.
5. “Believe you can and you are halfway there.” Teddy Roosevelt
Teddy Roosevelt had many inspirational habits and thoughts. And he too believed that our personal belief could govern a great deal of what happened.
Of course, the doubters will jump directly to some silly outlier. No, belief won’t make kindergarteners beat the Harlem Globetrotters.
But belief can make you more confident while talking to your boss about a raise. And belief can drive you to walk an extra mile after you thought you were done.
6. “Your mind is a powerful thing. When you fill it with positive thoughts, your life will start to change.” Unknown
This speaks volumes for itself. Whether it was said by a 1st grader or a president makes no difference.
Again, the mind has power over life. Fill it with hate and hate grows everywhere. Fill it with joy and humor and you will find a thousand extra reasons to smile.
7. “If you choose not to find joy in the snow, you will have less joy in your life, but the same amount of snow.” Unknown source
This could go for anything we find to be troublesome. Those troubles will exist no matter what. And if you consciously choose to find the joy and humor in them… Well, you know the rest.
You might even be about to start by laughing at the silly and annoying things kids do. You might still shake your head, but you will laugh too. After that, try laughing at the silly person in the mirror.
8. “You cannot make a person happy.” Will Smith
During a recent video, Will Smith stated that he retired from trying to make his wife happy. Of course, he did not say that he will stop being a good husband or father. He won’t discontinue being a good person.
But, he will stop making it his fault when his wife isn’t happy. Freedom from being in control of other people’s happiness makes you more positive long term.
Those most familiar with this plight are people pleasers. Running around all day trying to make someone else happy drains you and doesn’t make them happy.
9. “It’s easy to focus on all the reasons not to climb… instead of concentrating on how amazing the world, your world could actually look from the top [of your mountain].” Jeff Cavaliere
There’s no doubt about it, staying where you are will keep you comfortable. But developing a positive mindset takes away that comfort and replaces it with discontentment at your lack of growth.
Because developing a positive mindset takes growth.
10. “The grass is greener where you water it.” Neil Barringham
And speaking of work, green grass looks good. But it doesn’t happen all on its own.
There was a drought at a summer camp one year. The grass was dying everywhere and you couldn’t walk without getting dust in your mouth. Then the camp owners brought out the fire dept. to hose down the kids one evening.
Within days, you could see exactly where the most water had hit. The grass turned green, lush and soft. It took no work to let it die, but an effort to make it grow.
11. “Failure is a disappointment, but not defeat.” Jeanne Robertson
Sometimes, even when you work hard for something, you still fail. The same goes for developing a positive mindset. You might realize nothing has changed around you.
And that realization slows your progress. Negative thoughts start getting in again and your attitude tumbles. You have failed.
But you haven’t been defeated until you stop trying again.
12. “Find a place inside you where there’s joy, and the joy will burn out the pain.” Joseph Campbell
You may have heard that salt water and fresh water cannot both flow from the same spring.
Same with positivity and negativity in the mind. One will take over and the other will fade. When it comes down to it, you can’t multitask here.
If you focus on positives, you’ll be to busy to be negative.
13. “The forced will be last.” Al Kavadlo
Al Kavadlo has made holistic fitness his life’s work. He knows as well as anyone the importance of a positive mindset.
Unlike many coaches, he never forces anyone to do something. He seeks to inspire and encourage others, but not to force them.
Real change, change the begins inside, lasts. The change forced by an external force fades when the force leaves. But internal motivation stays even when the external forces say to quit.
14. “Results! Why, man, I have gotten a lot of results. I know several thousand things that won’t work.” Thomas Edison
No doubt, you read this with a light on above you. You have Thomas Edison to thank for that.
He reiterates here what has already been said about positive attitudes and work. Neither one gets you to your goal alone. But without both, you have failed before you had a chance to false start.
And remember, getting results differs a great deal from getting good results.
15. “There are two ways to live: You can live as if nothing is a miracle; You can live as if everything is a miracle.” Albert Einstein
This comes right back to a personal choice of positive thinking. You don’t have to think positive, and being negative will always be easier.
But when you see everything as a miracle, how can you stay negative. Take the way someone learned to make sheets softer by including more threads.
Or a washing machine to do the work for you. How about toothpaste? Imagine having to smell everyone’s bad breath!
How about the single greatest invention of all time: Toilet paper!
